Legend has it that the horse was built to house a number of Greek troops inside. Once it was completed and the troops were hidden, the Greek army pretended to leave, and the Trojans were fooled into taking the horse into the city. The shape of a horse was chosen due to the animal's symbolic importance to the Trojans.After night fell, the Greek soldiers hidden inside poured out of their hiding place and opened the gates for the waiting Greek army. The Greeks then laid waste to the city of Troy, sealing their victory in the war.
