Quick Look: Mario Kart 8 DLC

Game of the year all years. (Not really, but goddamn, Mario Kart 8 got incredible with this latest batch of DLC.)

The P-Wing is a reference to the Mario power-up of the same name ;)

The only thing that worries me about the idea of Nintendo joining their handheld and home console things together is if they do something real stupid like only being able to play the system either handheld or hooked up to a TV, but not both at the same time - which is the kind of silly thing I could see Nintendo doing. I like having both a Nintendo handheld and a home console, and those two things being independent of one another. If it stayed that way, but with games purchased able to be played on either system with cross-saves and greater interaction with the platform, it could certainly be awesome.

I was expecting Dan somehow managed to convince Jeff and Brad to play Mario Kart 8 but I'm happy with Vinny too.

The DLC (both packs) is $12, not $20. That's 6 characters, acouple additional karts, and four additional cups.

I've been listening to that Big Blue remix an awful lot. It's pretty spectacular.

FYI, they're only looking at DLC 2 here, not 1 and 2.

We need another GBeast Mario Karty Party. That one with Tina and Cara was fantastic fun.

As someone who came to the series with the GBA edition (and never found one I liked as much as it until MK8 arrived) it's cool to see more tracks in here from that edition. Really helps me to comprehend how much they updated them for the modern game too.

200cc makes Mario Kart 8 almost a completely different game. It's fantastic and terrifying at the same time.

Ah, in the upcoming it said that it was a DLC pack 1 & 2 quicklook, but now it only says "Mario Kart DLC". Makes sense, since they only looked at the characters and tracks from the second DLC.

I've been using the right stick for acceleration in this game for the longest time, but have had to wean myself off of it when playing 200cc since you can't really break when using it and I haven't used breaking at all prior to playing that speed class.

It's very rare that Vinny gets on my nerves during any GB content but today was one of those days, ah well.

Good job Alex for holding that Quick Look together.

Just for clarification, if no one else has mentioned it, the two DLC packs are $8 each, or $12 as a bundle.

Also, nice video. My reaction the first time I tried 200cc (which I believe is free, and not tied to the DLC) was about the same as Alex's.

Edit: Also, that Big Blue music is the beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeest. Stop teasing us with Mario Kart DLC, and make a new F-Zero game, Nintendo! Please!

Oh wow, I've never seen Condescending Lakitu before! I'm sure I'll get real familiar with him once I start doing 200cc. (I'm working my way through the classes on the new cups.)

Haha, yeah, same. I don't think I've ever finished below second or third in a Grand Prix, so I'm used to just seeing the cup. Didn't know that Condescending Lakitu applauds you. I also haven't played 200cc yet.

Yeah, it's really a pretty incredible value. Kind of bummed that DLC Pack 1 didn't get any GiantBomb love, since I think it was the stronger pack overall (Link is great, and I think the Excitebike Arena and Mute City are both awesome), but GB doesn't have a ton of Mario Kart love so I guess it's not a big surprise. I'm glad it got covered at all.

I never thought I'd see the day when it was necessary to brake in Mario Kart.

Hell yeah, Button Mashin'!! I really loved that show at the time, I actually have tham saved on my HDD and go back from time time. It's just...just pure gold.

There should be one last DLC pack which just adds an option under 200cc labelled "F-Zero". Crank that shit up to infinity.

@vinny is correct in his assumption that the old tracks were not tuned properly for 200cc speeds. There are multiple old tracks that cannot handle the speed. There are a lot of jumps that will make you fall off the course/hit a wall if you hit them at the new full speed, which kind of sucks. It just means that you have to take different routes in those tracks.

Basically they took a look at the second pack of DLC. Eight tracks for two cups, three new characters, and some karts and parts. There's also a free update that adds 200cc which isn't quite F-Zero fast, but it's faster than the series has seen before. The brake button is absolutely necessary if you don't want to grind the rails.

God dammit GB - why is it so hard/annoying for you guys to check basic facts like pricing before going into a QL? It's literally a quick google search. Like, this is sort of your job, isn't it?

I don't need you to be an expert on mechanics and play like a pro, but claiming that the DLC is nearly twice as expensive as it is might actually turn some people off. $12 for all of this content (including the first pack) is an absolute steal and maybe the best value DLC-wise I've seen for a while.

I want to reiterate what others are saying because it's important-- both DLC packs together are $12 USD. They add 16 tracks together, and there are really good tracks. It's a great DLC pack.

@ravenlock: mario kart 8 got plenty of coverage you shouldnt be so bummed about an old games late dlc releases lack of exposure - I am pretty confident everyone knows exactly what this game is and whether or not its for them

I was real disappointed, around the 19m mark, that you don't stop "dead in your tracks" when slamming into the finish line sign.

I've never gotten to use most of those items before, they look like fun; almost as much fun as winning.
