I've also considered putting the opening plot near the top with the overview, and then putting the complete plot in a noted section further down in the article.

I've seen them do something like that on Wikipedia before. But they always had a spoiler warning as they got to the full plot. Always include some form of warning. Then if an idiot complains you can point it out to shut them up.
