Persona 4 is a spin off while SMT 4 is part of the main series. There are no social links in SMT 4, it is a much more traditional RPG. The basic systems are fairly similar, and if you enjoyed the Persona games I cannot recommend this enough.

Completely different. Shin Megami Tensei 4 is a true Shin Megami Tensei game. Persona 4 is a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei.

Mechanically there are a few similarities (like spell names and a general focus on exploiting enemy weaknesses), but they are fundamentally pretty different, with SMT4 being significantly more hardcore and a much larger focus on combat and exploration than Persona. Also unlike Persona you only have one human party member in battle, the rest are demons you recruit. It also has much more direct religious overtones, with the battle of heaven and hell being at the center of the story.

I just got one recently myself and the first game I got was Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I do have Persona Q Wild Card Edition on pre-order. The next game I would like to get is either Shovel Knight or Shin Megami Tensei IV.

Fire Emblem Awakening is still the best game I've played on the 3DS, so I'm gonna cast my vote for that one.

The one thing I should mention is for a while Nintendo is giving eshop credit back for purchases on Digital Deluxe Wii U games. $10 for ever $50 spend on Wii U only. That might be the way to go if you're planning on buying a Wii U soon. You can tie your funds together with your 3DS eshop, but only purchases made on the Wii U count towards it. But free games DO count towards it. That includes Club Nintendo games and the pack in games from a new Wii U.

I'll also say Mario 3D Land and Fire Emblem: Awakening. Also, if it appeals to you, Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, but calling that *the* game when it's so niche and also available on Vita (maybe better there? Certainly better resolution/textures), maybe only true if you really loved the first and that type of game in general.

Bravely Default for me. Put 90 some hours into it earlier this year and like 8 into the demo. My current favorite game this year.

Really liked Link Between Worlds as well.

Super Mario 3D World is probably my favorite, but I haven't finished Fire Emblem or Shin Megami Tensei IV yet, which has yet to come out in Europe. Not a huge fan of ALBW.

@tom_omb: So I already purchased Pokemon Y and Zelda digitally do I get any points for already owning those games or is it from this point moving forward?

@jamin724: You would have gotten points if you tied your Nintendo ID to Club Nintendo and made digital purchases. I'm not sure how you would register a digital game if you haven't done that before hand. Maybe it's possible, I don't know.

If you still have the paper work from your 3DS you can resister that, just find the Club Nintendo registration number, same goes for any boxed games.

After all the feedback I would like to open this up to ask everyone what are there must haves for the 3DS/DS era and not just one game.

I was not thinking of getting a 3DS but they had a deal this weekend. A brand new 2DS for just €50 which is one heck of a deal! So I bought it but now I need some games =P
