The Fallout franchise is a post-apocalyptic series of role-playing and tactics games originally developed by Black Isle, and most recently, Bethesda Softworks and Obsidian Entertainment.
It was on a "new" engine, emphasis on the quotes. It was just a modified version of the Oblivion engine that all of Bethesda's gen 7 games ran on, which is a modified version of Gamebryo. It's ability to push polygons was better and there were some much better looking effects, but all terrible scripting and animations were still there.
Man, I just finished watching all of those videos decoding everything and was super excited. I hate everything.
Whoever wrote those messages and handled the 2299 site deserves employment somewhere. The whole ARG was masterfully done. It's a goddamn shame it wasn't legit but, fuck. Kudos for getting this far.

It's funny to think it has to be real because a troll couldn't possibly do it. That's what makes me laugh. Morse code is easy. In some ways it's just binary in audio form.
@alexandersheen: I totally agree! Just watched all the summary videos in a dark apartment at midnight, with headphones on, and now I am pretty freaked out. The ham radio part with the emergency broadcast especially got to me. I had to check around the room more than a few times to make sure everything was OK.
Even though it was fake, the story was fun to follow. The story that was being set up here would have been an awesome way to start out a Fallout game.
This sucks ass that its a hoax and somebody has WAAAYY too much time on their hands. That same somebody needs to get employed NOW to run up Bethesda's marketing department because....damn....

Yeah, if it was fake, why didn't Bethesda say it was a hoax as soon as the site launched? (Or perhaps they did but people didn't believe them). I still have a glimmer of hope that this was done with the consent of Bethesda and they want to makes us all disappointed then reveal it on the VGX as the ultimate troll announcement.
Well, I do hope the story of Fallout 4 will be good but I'm sad this is not it. In a post apocalyptic world where Super Mutants, Ghouls, Deathclaws and other fucked up shit exist, the notion of something unknown, something that could wipe out an entire Vault with 899 people in it is terrifying. And it was set in the Commonwealth too. Fuck!
Nothing's too elaborate to not be a troll. Bethesda decided to speak out when they realized this guy was doing a better job gorilla marketing a hoax than they are with real info.
Fallout 4 will eventually arrive, but it's "marketing" like this that gets me hyped. I don't understand why some people are so angry at the guy, sure, he fooled us all..but look at amount of people getting hyped for it, people on reddit figuring out the codes and stuff. It sort of unified the fans of the game to "solve the riddles".
While I didn't personally do jackshit, I did enjoy reading all the stuff that people had figured out. Even though it was all hoax.
