Hopefully, future runs will at mention the setup used to play the game (DC hardware? XBLA? Something else?), in case the community wants to also spend some time with the game of the moment.

This is not the run.

The visual gags at the beginning and end are absolutely some of my favorite things these two chuckleheads do.

I actually realized Vinny hardly ever blocks...that would help, lol.

Would be a good start, also noticed he picked up a bad habit in this episode. He was back stepping an awful lot and dangerously close to the edge in some cases. And i get why he tries to do all the new commands he has learned but he will often try them multiple times in a row.

But that last thing is a bad habit i often do that as well when picking up a fighting game.

I love Soul Calibur, and this is about as good of a setup as you could want (kudos to Dan's setup). No but in there...I do hope they finish this soon.

I think their next thing should be a bake-off: The Great BEast Bake-Off

• Vinny is likely a skilled in the kitchen, but he can't help but improvise with disastrous results likely.
• Dan up until three years ago no real understanding of how actual food worked, but he has learned over the past few years many things.

I think they should both be told to make a cake from scratch (flour, eggs, water, fats), no help from anyone else, no mixes. They can follow a recipe, but the recipes has to be text only - no pictures.

Alex and Jeff B act as judges...and there must be someone else at CNet who can judge a cake.

Shame I wasn't able to watch this live.

Edit: Vinny might need to work on throwing now that he's on fightstick. That's something people who transfer from a single button to throw to a combination of buttons to throw often have trouble with.

I think once Vinny gets full "control" of the arcade stick he'll do a lot better. He did way better after playing on controller for a bit.

No advice here, just keep playing, and have fun. Experience, and playing with actual human opponents makes you better. Practice is just learning moves, nothing more.

Vinny is worse with the fight stick....

Not a huge fan of fighting games, hoping for some more traditional Vinny nonsense soon.

My friend back in high school when this first came out on dream cast was an absolute asshole who found you can spam low attacks with certain characters and there is no way out. There's a reason no one has this game featured in tournaments. Soul calibur 2 had Cassandra the best fighting game character ever and was better in terms of less bullshit spam attacks.

Vinny needs to finish getting used to his stick it takes a few hours to get completely comfortable with stick when you make the jump to it. Once he gets comfy and learns to move as well as he was on pad and then block and throw he's got this.

This series has been a great look at people naturally getting into fighting games and pushing each other to get better as they go.

I always found games with repeated directional taps played better for me on a d-pad rather than a fight stick and games that relied on round motions felt better to me on a stick.

Man this series is great. I'm finding myself constantly checking in for updates.

I hope if they do another day of multiple attempts they find a way to post them that doesn't spoil all the runs but the last one.

If Vinny practiced defense at all he'd be unstoppable. Dan seems actually pretty good at blocking but Vinny leaves himself open. Dan finally figured that out and is punishing Vinny by just being super aggressive.

Not sure if its the fight stick or just where he is at with the game but that's his biggest weakness that I see at this point. Im sure he'll also be more aggressive agajnst Dan once he gets his fight stick sighted in.

I was gonna say the same thing! He doesn't block, gets combo'd and then...doesn't block. Dan just spams pokes most of the time and Vinny just walks into them.

I think Vinny's in that phase you get in with fighting games where you learn just enough about the game that you get worse at it until you can actually execute the things you've learned in a real fight.

I believe in Vinny. I remember it taking a month or two to get the hang of a stick, and then more time to unlearn a grip. But also hes only trying to beat Dan. I bet if he blocks more and finds a gimmick or two for each character(like Dan has) he'll be fine.

@vinny: I'm so proud.. Unfortunately, you are at that stage where you're learning too much of the game to remember the fundamentals. Try to block, sidestep and throw more, and you're golden. A good defense is the most important part of any good fighting game.

@vinny For the big characters like Siegfried, Nightmare, Rock and Astaroth you want to use kicks for your fast moves. In general a kick while holding down on the stick, which will often provide a low kick (Depending on character). Dan blocks standing a lot. (Also use mostly kicks with Hwang, he's pretty awful all around but his kicks are solid)

In general more horizontal attacks with the stick held down will work wonders on Dan until he picks up on what you're doing.

For Taki a good mixup is going for the roll that you do the super-charged-dive-thing out of but instead of using that move, just exiting the roll and going for a throw. Once dan picks up on you doing that, start blocking after a roll for the last bit of the rock-paper-scissors there. Experiment with Takis other options out of her roll, especially kick-button and/or horizontal moves. Horizontal and kick attacks tend to have less "recovery frames" meaning less time after you make contact that you have to wait before you can take any action again. I believe she also has a sideways roll (using the same button combination just held to the side.) but they mayyyy have just added that in later games.

Taki is the best character hands down in this soul calibur. Xianghua comes close. Taki is just extremely difficult to play, so don't get super discouraged or anything if you lose with her. She's tough, and you seem to be a mindset based player, so stay positive between deaths and you'll win in no time.

EDIT: Forgot to add! With Hwang, press horizontal attack 2 times when holding down and towards your opponent. 3AA if you're familiar with the 8-way run format.

What's the difference between Edge Master and Inferno?

I think Vinny is trying to play technical against spam and it only works by pure chance.

I noticed Vinny started throwing grabs often early on, but he doesn't anymore. Grabs turn dinamics in fighting games, and specially in this game where you can throw an opponent off the map. They caught Dan by surprise in the first episodes.

Please Vinny, grab as much as you can.

After this was mentioned in the earlier episodes I researched and I couldn't find a single moveset for inferno and the Wiki only mentions him having a unique moveset in SCII. I DID find a thread talking about the helicopter attack...A SCII thread. This is probably the only time I've ever looked something game-related up online and not found a clear answer. Made even more bizarre by the popularity of this series.

Vinny is THE guy to work with Dan on a consistent basis. It's amazing how great they are together. No offense to Alex, but I'm just remembering Dan on the west coat and he just fits in way better on the east coast with Papa Vinny.

she we be concerned none of them noticed the panty shots going on while they were talking about fight sticks? One thing that always amazed about soul caliber is that no one ever seems to notice the "service" level of the game. I mean it isn't nearly as bad as some, but it is certainly there.

This GameFAQ has a list (near bottom). I couldn't tell you whether it is accurate / complete, but the author seems pretty thorough.

I think it's notable that Dan has gotten better as the streams have continued as well. Looking back, it's pretty clear he didn't really have his foot on the gas all the way in the first couple episodes.

If this Vinny could combine his skills with episode 2 or 3 Vinny he'd win for sure. Dan's playing aggressive now -- if you rediscover guard impacts, sidesteps, and blocks you'll be able to use your fancy new moves to really punish him.

Getting a fight stick involved? That might complicate some things.
