Quick Look: MotorStorm Apocalypse

Blum's character here looks way too much like his character in Vanquish.  And -

The comic style seems a call back to Jet Moto. MotorStorm seems like the spiritual successor.

This looks pretty fun.  Too bad the cut-scenes and story look so terrible.   That stuff is just so generic feeling where the previous games had a really nice, unique tone to them.  The second game was polished as hell.  This one looks like they slapped some stupid characters with stupid dialogue onto some teenager's drawings.

Mud Plugger sounds a little dirty.

I hate how the motion comic stuff is animated, especially since the artwork itself is so good. They really should have farmed that stuff out to a better animation house.

Other than that, it's kind of fun looking, definitely worth a rent.

Wow. Those animated comic cutscenes are such shit. I've seen better on Newgrounds.

The best part of apocalypse is by far the multiplayer with the perks, leveling etc. I got about half way through single player 3-4 weeks ago (aus local release was never delayed) and almost wanted to kill myself everytime a cutscene started.  The MP though, damn fun as the last two games were.

I really wanted to see the splitscreen :-(

Not the greatest arcade racer, but the track Skyline is one of the best arcade race tracks in any game.

Have to say, I'm not a fan of the motion comic thing either.  They seem to be the "cool" thing to do in games these days, it's being completely overused and is entirely unsuitable here.

Can't remember the last time I've seen Jeff nitpick a game this much.

Motion comic stuff can - and regularly does - look awesome. InFamous and the MGS/Silent Hill stuff on PSP is excellent. This separates and animates elements too MUCH though, making everyone look like cardboard people. Plus, "stretching" artwork to animate it *always looks atrocious*. I think even Newgrounds collectively know that.

This looks like it was made in the early 90s.  I can't tell if it's stupid fun or stupid stupid.

How is that only inFamous and, of all things, Twisted Metal seem to know how to make motion comics NOT look like garbage?

LAP 1

First, it was the Quick look of the Gears 3 beta, than Socom 4, now Motorstorm. Jeff seems better at talking and writing about games than actually playing them. (Unless of course it's a 2-D fighter.) Yes, a motion comic story mode exactly what this franchise needed. Like Ryan, I enjoyed Pacific Rift, but this sequel doesn't seem like an improvement; looks like quite the opposite. I'm going to stick with Split Second and Hot Pursuit until Dirt 3 comes out.

This seems a real step down from Pacific Rift. The level of polish found in the last game just isn't present here. It also looks like they're using a different engine, the lighting a physics aren't nearly as impressive as pacific rifts.

Was this a different team?

I really just dislike everything about this. The style, the attitude, the music, the controls.

JEFF, don't be so nickpicky.

First of all, yes you CAN change camera angle as you can drive in first person mode.
Second, I don't think Jeff gets what this game is about. You don't tend to ram and race competitively at the same time. The cleaner the race (the fewer bumps and collisions you have), the quicker you'll be.

 

I'm SO not surprised Jeff is nickpicking this because if he wasn't so dam negative about the motorstorm series then he would have realised why some gamers continue to come back to the motorstorm francise. Credit to Ryan as he's already somewhat played a bit of Pacific Rift and understand a little bit about what the series is about. But I expect better journalism from Jeff.    

BTW, on a separate note, and this is something which has been bugging me for years, what ever happened to the motorstorm arctic edge quick look which was mentioned in a ILOVEMONDAYS feature yonks ago. I would really appreciate a reason to why that never happened.

Other than the story bits this looks pretty good, I really enjoyed Pacific Rift. However I have so many other games that I feel I need to focus on finishing that I am going to hold off grabbing this for a while.

The coast is toast!

This game seems pretty cool but alas I only have room in my budget and time for one racing game this year and its gonna be Dirt 3. Great soundtrack for this game though.

Wow game looks pretty fun, destruction is incredible. Cutscenes remind me of Sealab 2021 which gives it a little tongue-in-cheek humor. User reviews are really positive. I hope it's not just PS3 bias that is keeping people from giving it a fair shot.

So I got this game thanks to Playstation Plus. Except the digital version's cut. There are no cutscenes. WTF? I'm not interested in the story but that's not the point, I expected to get the full retail version, not something that's been neutered to cut down on its size.

I too was wondering why there was no cutscenes. Oh well.
